The only way you survive those two is if you got the ear of the current or soon to be new power monger.

Ha! That's actually one of the reasons why I sometimes suggest here that people might want to join TPTB instead of bitching about them all day long.

You're right: the best place to be diversified into is TPTB. While the article suggests that the most evolutionary successful of our species will be diversified all over the place (financial sectors, multi-continent land holdings, various skills capabilities, etc) - I'd like to add that marrying above your station, cultivating good looks and charm and wit, and networking with TPTB (through country clubs, attending elite colleges / graduate programs, joining local political machines, etc) will strengthen the chances of your survival and may even lead to your success and profit!
